I attended St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis., where I graduated summa cum laude with degrees in communication arts and political science. My first job after college was at a Green Bay radio station, filling in for a woman on maternity leave. I earned a measly $4.25 an hour, but I had one memorable moment: interviewing Barbara Bush, then wife of Vice President George H. W. Bush, as the Secret Service looked on. When the radio station gig ended, I took a job as press secretary in the Wisconsin State Legislature, initially working under then-House Minority Leader Tommy Thompson, who eventually served as Wisconsin governor and then U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

In 1989 I left the workforce to have three children in three-and-a-half years (phew!), obtaining a Master's Degree in religious studies along the way. I resumed my career in 1994, when I began freelancing. Since then I've written for a wide variety of newspapers, magazines, trade journals, Web sites and corporations; I'm a two-time winner of the Travel Classics Writers' Contest award.

When I'm not hanging out with my family or writing, I'm most likely running, one of my biggest passions. I've raced everything from the mile to (four) 50K ultramarathons, and qualified for the Boston Marathon 12 times.

I beat P. Diddy that year.

Me again, this time running a 50K
